Experience

Kate heads up HGF’s life sciences team. She has over 20 years experience in the patent profession. Her expertise lies in life sciences and biopharmaceutical fields, with a particular emphasis on immunologic products. She is entrusted by clients to prosecute complex European portfolios relating to platform biologic technologies. In this respect, industry guides remark that Kate is “a wise counsellor and trusted opinion-giver, with particular expertise on biologic products” (IAM Patent 1000 2024).”

In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Kate advises on all aspects of patent strategy and life cycle management, regularly handling due diligence matters and opinions relating to validity and infringement. She has extensive experience representing clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO. Recent examples of successful post grant experience in the biopharmaceutical field include: successful revocation of EP2724728, directed to a recombinant cell line and biological production method, for lack of sufficient disclosure; successful defence of a key commercial EP patent a method of preparing a biologic product (T0605/19); and successful revocation of biologic composition patent, where HGF successfully argued lack of inventive step on the basis of a Korean Patent, the public availability of which was disputed by the Patentee (T0528/21). “
