Experience

40 years since qualifying as a patent attorney, Mark has worked both in industry, firstly in the oil industry with Burmah-Castrol, then in the power tools field with Black & Decker, and in private practice for any client willing to pay! Mark has learned that clients want to know their options, but also to get a positive recommendation on a course of action. This means getting to know your business, and what you are trying to achieve through your intellectual property.

Mark is gregarious and inquisitive, and will get to the bottom of what needs to be done in connection with your IP matters. He will let you know the anticipated costs and, once he has your approval, he will get it done promptly and efficiently. And if Mark can't do it himself, he has a great team of professionals around him to whom he can refer legal, trade mark or other technology areas of patent practice.

Mark handles engineering inventions, but where these have chemical or electronic elements, that is no problem given his broad scientific knowledge. Mark has also developed expertise in handling designs, that is, the appearance of products, as opposed to what they do.

CSR

Mark is a director of Pamia Limited, which is the mutual insurance company run by the patent profession and which insures 97% of the patent and trade mark attorney profession in the United Kingdom.

The company indemnifies HGF, and all insured members, against claims that may be made when things go wrong. Unfortunately, this is just a fact of life, and despite the best endeavours of any firm or individual, mistakes do occasionally get made which can result in losses for our clients.

With assets in excess of £20million, and close links with the insurance markets, Pamia provides a first layer of insurance for its members, with excess layers provided by the general insurance market. The Board of Directors is made up of individuals from members firms who are advised by the managers of Pamia, namely Thomas Miller Professional Indemnity Limited, who manage several mutual insurance companies. The Board, however, takes full responsibility for the company, including claims management as well as the investment of its assets.

Mark is Chair of the Rules & Terms of Cover committee, and a member of the Investment committee, both committees being answerable to the Board.
