New appointments and changes to the leadership team at HGF as it continues to strengthen its position in the marketplace

July 2021

We are pleased to announce that HGF has appointed a new CEO, Martyn Fish. Martyn was previously Head of HGF’s Law team and is a successful IP litigator. He has 21 years in the IP industry, joined HGF in 2004 and was appointed as Partner in 2010. Prior to his appointment as CEO, Martyn led the litigation and transactional IP practice at HGF. Martyn will continue to focus on the firm’s commitment to delivering a high quality service to our clients whilst continuing to build our European presence. Community engagement across a spectrum of projects covering D&I, sustainability and our engagement with the science and technology community will continue to be high priorities.

His appointment comes on the back of the news that Paul Sanderson has retired as CEO after 17 years in the position.

Under Paul’s leadership the firm has seen a dramatic expansion from 5 UK offices to 22 offices in 7 countries and 188 attorneys across Europe, positioning HGF as one of Europe’s leading IP firms.

Martyn Fish commented, “On behalf of the whole firm I would like to thank Paul for his significant contribution. HGF has transformed as a business under his leadership.”

HGF Chair Jason Lumber commented on behalf of the firm’s Management Board, “We are confident that under Martyn’s leadership HGF will continue to deliver high quality services to clients and enable us to continue to deliver against the firm’s strategic goals.”

Other changes to the leadership team encompass the appointment of Harry Hutchinson, Senior Partner to the Management Board, Rachel Fetches replaces Martyn Fish as Head of the Law team and Dr Chris Benson takes on the position of Head of the Electronics team from Harry Hutchinson.

Vanessa Stainthorpe moves into the role of EDI board sponsor. Vanessa has been a leading member of the successful external IP Inclusive initiative for a number of years and has championed a number of high-profile projects within the firm. Vanessa’s passion and drive will enable the firm to deliver against its EDI targets over the coming years.

During the pandemic the firm has continued its success with record numbers of trainee attorneys passing exams, the landmark event of opening its first office in France under the leadership of Vivien Verbrugge as well as continued client development and new client wins.
