HGF client SymPhysis Medical secures €2.2M to develop palliative care solutions

October 2024

Galway-based MedTech company, SymPhysis Medical, which develops patient-centred solutions in palliative care and focuses on digital catheter-based devices to treat fluid buildup in the body caused by late-stage cancers, has secured €2.2m in its latest funding round.

HGF manages all aspects of SymPhysis’s IP needs, with an emphasis on a strategy to ensure the IP supports the business so that they achieve not only the best protection of their IP, but also provide the best narrative to investors and potential buyers. As their business progresses along its journey from early-stage start-up to becoming commercial, the focus has been on building value in the company.  The HGF Team includes Craig Thomson, Jennifer Uno, Sean McDonagh, Alex Colman, David Akerman, and Jason Lessard.

A quote from Michelle Tierney, Co-Founder and CSO of Symphysis: “Prior to thinking about and developing our IP strategy with HGF, we were very much viewing our patent filings in isolation and not thinking strategically regarding how our patents may combine into a portfolio with other IP assets, and that we ensure we can be competitive in the eventual market we would commercialise. But even before commercialisation, thinking about how our IP may add value to the business in the short to medium term. For instance, by working with HGF we were able to pull together 2-3 year timelines regarding key upcoming events for the business, such a funding/investment rounds and conference attendances, so that we could consider timings for filings that lined up with communications we wanted to make re our IP to stakeholders for these events.”

The company is aiming to raise a total of €6.5m this year to fund ongoing expansion. Its next funding round is set to close at the end of the year.
