Gary has extensive experience covering the chemical, medical device, pharmaceutical and mechanical fields. He has represented a range of local and international companies across these technologies for more than 20 years.
Gary is personally mentioned and recommended in leading legal directories such as the Legal 500, Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) and Managing Intellectual Property (MIP). Gary is also one of the limited number of UK patent professionals recommended in the International Guide to the World’s Patent Practitioners IAM 1000 which lists the world's top 1000 patent practitioners and is also listed as an IAM Global Leader. He has been personally listed in the IAM 1000 from 2014-2020 and been an MIP Star from 2014-2020.
Gary provides commercially focussed advice to a range of organisations. This has included advising on all aspects of patent filing strategies, freedom-to-operate opinions, infringement and validity opinions, due diligence and licensing issues.
He also regularly represents clients in Opposition and Appeal Proceedings and is highly sought after by clients due to his advocacy skills in both defending and opposing European patents.
Gary has also led the firm to winning the MIP Scottish IP Firm of the Year Award on numerous occasions and to being a Tier 1 legally ranked firm.
He joined HGF as a Partner in 2007 to open and manage the firm’s first Scottish office. During this time he has sat on the firm’s Strategy Group, International Review Committee and run the Chemistry Group. He is also a Non-Executive Director of HGF’s Management Board.

Within our office Gary regularly trains a range of trainee patent professionals introducing them to the profession and also guiding them through their professional career and successfully through their exams.
In the Community Gary has provided extensive training opportunities such as summer placements over several years for University students within our office.
He has also previously been a mentor and judge for Biotechnology Yes.
Gary has also previously been involved in charitable organisations such as The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust where he has undertaken pro bono work. Gary has also provided a range of pro bono work for the Bon Accord Rotary Club.
