5th Member State to Ratify the UPC Agreement – Denmark

June 2014

News from the Council of the EU shows that Denmark is the 5th member state to deposit its instrument of ratification on the Unified Patent Court agreement.

Closely following Belgium and Sweden, Denmark has now officially ratified the Agreement on the Unified Patent Court.

With the first ratification (by Austria) taking place almost a year ago now, even at the pace of 5 ratifications in the first year, it could still be a further 2 years before the requisite 13 counties ratify the agreement and it comes into
effect. This rate of progress and timescale seems to fit with the latest news from the preparatory committee who have observed that the original target date and roadmap for Unitary Patents by the end of 2015 is “… still
ambitious”.
