Experience

Alex is pragmatic and straight-talking. Whether working with in-house counsel at large corporates or first-time patent applicants, he garners praise for guiding clients through the complexities of patent issues to achieve solutions most useful to their businesses. He has expertise in delivering great value advice, having made a speciality of helping clients with tight margins and those in the early stages of commercialising their ideas.

His colleagues describe him as a safe pair of hands, which is why Alex handles matters for some of HGF’s largest clients, and helps to develop its commercial relationships. Clients benefit from his creative ability to revitalise the fortunes of the most struggling patent applications before both the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office.

As an engineer-turned-lawyer, Alex's practice is focused primarily on building technologies and construction products, including green technologies embodying energy reduction and decarbonisation, and producing renewable energy, as well as medical devices, particularly injectables and wound care, automotive technologies and textiles.

Alex came to HGF from Newcastle University, where he gained a first-class Master’s degree in civil and structural engineering, and a PhD in structural engineering.
