Dr Alex Colman
Trainee Patent Attorney
Alex advises on the protection and exploitation of intellectual property in the field of mechanical engineering. In particular, Alex deals with technologies including medical devices, automotive components, engineering for construction, lightweight structures, textiles and consumer products.
Alex works with a wide range of clients, including universities, research bodies, SMEs, large international companies and individual inventors. The majority of Alex's work is in drafting and prosecuting patent applications throughout the world. Although, he advises on all aspects of patent strategy and portfolio management, including providing opinions on freedom to operate and enforcing patent rights.
Alex enjoys working with clients to help them understand how they can use intellectual property effectively within their businesses and delivers commercially-focussed advice.
Alex has a first class degree in engineering and a doctorate from Newcastle University in the UK. His doctoral research focussed on developing test methods and computer models to characterise the behaviour of woven composites used in construction. Alex's studies give him a broad understanding of mechanics and material science, as well specialist knowledge of topics including lightweight structures, geotechnics and hydraulics. Alex has also obtained a postgraduate certificate in intellectual property.
Alex joined HGF's Manchester office October 2013 as part of the Engineering group. He is currently working towards UK chartered status and qualification as a European patent attorney.
