Quinas Technology Wins WIPO Global Award for Innovation in ICT

July 2025

Our client, Quinas Technology, has been named the winner of the WIPO Global Award 2025 in the ICT Startup category.

Quinas is a spin-out from Lancaster University. We have worked closely with both Quinas and the university to support the development and protection of their intellectual property portfolio.

Quinas is pioneering the development of high-speed, energy-efficient, non-volatile memory using quantum mechanical resonant tunnelling, a groundbreaking technology with the potential to redefine what is possible in memory architecture. The technology was developed by Professor Manus Hayne, Chief Scientific Officer at Quinas and a Physics Professor at Lancaster University. Professor Hayne said the company is “truly delighted and honoured” to be named a winner, adding that the “innovation and intellectual property are inseparable aspects at the heart of Quinas’ approach to the commercialisation of ULTRARAM™.”

Their strategic approach to IP protection, including coverage across key semiconductor markets such as the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and China, reflects a clear alignment between IP and commercial growth.

HGF is proud to be supporting Quinas as their partner. Their success at the WIPO Global Awards is a testament to their technical excellence, proactive innovation strategy, and commitment to global impact.

Jessica Wenmouth, Head of Research Commercialisation at Lancaster University commented, “This award for Quinas is a fantastic recognition of the role that strategic IP management and research commercialisation play in transforming world-class science into globally impactful technologies.”

Adam Williams, CEO of the UK Intellectual Property Office, said: “Quinas’ achievement showcases the journey from laboratory research to pioneering technology, highlighting the UK’s strengths in quantum innovation and IP-intensive enterprise.”

Science Minister Lord Vallance said: “It is excellent to see Quinas Technology winning this prestigious international award, demonstrating the ability of our great universities to spin out world-class semiconductor research into successful commercial opportunities with a global reach.

“Through our Industrial Strategy this government will continue to back British innovation like this breakthrough memory technology – making data centres more energy-efficient to help them grow and compete around the world.”

Congratulations to the whole team at Quinas for this well-deserved recognition.
