Senior Patent Attorney

David's practice is predominantly in the areas of chemical and biomedical research tools, including analytical instrumentation, and pharmaceuticals. David's experience in these areas includes GB and European patent prosecution, drafting and international portfolio management for large corporations and universities. David also has experience in oppositions. Other subject matter that falls within David's practice includes medical devices, nanotechnology and advanced materials.

David has a BSc with first class honours and PhD in Chemistry, together with a Bachelor of Laws degree, all from the University of New South Wales.  David also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property from the University of Manchester.

His doctoral research involved the construction of a novel mass spectrometer, and following this he conducted postdoctoral research in the area of proteomics and analysis of post-translational modification of proteins. His research experience covers development of instrumentation and methods of chemical analysis, through to characterisation of biological materials.

In addition to his scientific training and European and UK patent experience, David qualified as a solicitor in Sydney, Australia, before completing his PhD. He spent most of this time in IP litigation, where he gained experience in patent infringement proceedings and exposure to practical aspects of enforcement and commercialisation of many types of intellectual property rights. Since joining HGF, David has also qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales. This combination of scientific and legal experience has given David a particular interest in the contentious areas of patent practice, and the interplay between regulatory requirements and patent practice for pharmaceuticals.

David joined HGF in 2007 and currently practices as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney.
