Alex is a Patent Attorney working in the Engineering Team in the Sheffield office. Since joining HGF in April 2013, Alex has worked for a wide range of clients, generally focusing on mechanical and electronic technologies. He also spent a year on secondment in the patents department of a major automotive manufacturer, which provided him with valuable insight into the commercial uses of intellectual property.
Alex helps clients ranging from local SMEs to multinationals to build commercially valuable intellectual property portfolios. He also advises clients on freedom-to-operate in view of third party rights.
Before joining HGF, Alex gained a First Class degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield, and was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers prize for gaining the highest mark on the degree programme. He also holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sheffield. During his PhD studies he investigated the effects of mechanical forces on human cells. This interdisiplinary project involved developing experimental and computational techniques for studying the response of cultured cells to well-defined mechanical stimuli.
Alex qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2017 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2018.
