MevoCem Nominated for the Earthshot Prize by CIPA

June 2025

We’re delighted to share that our client, Material Evolution, has been nominated by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) for the globally renowned Earthshot Prize, in recognition of their pioneering cement technology, MevoCem.

Founded by The Royal Foundation, The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental award that recognises and supports innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing climate and sustainability challenges. Each year, five winners receive funding to accelerate their solutions and drive lasting change across the globe.

With traditional cement responsible for about 8% of global CO2 emissions (and up to 80% of concrete’s carbon footprint), MevoCem is a breakthrough in sustainable construction. It’s produced via a patented alkali fusion process that needs no heat and uses industrial byproducts, reducing emissions by up to 85% while delivering equal or better performance.

Thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) optimisation, MevoCem is already scaling, from lab tests to real-world sites, via their first self-funded plant in Wrexham with 120,000t/year capacity. Future formulations are aiming for a net-zero and carbon-negative status.

Dr. Jennifer Unsworth, Partner at HGF, commented: “At HGF, we are proud to support Material Evolution as they pioneer ultra-low-carbon, high-performance cement solutions. Their innovative fusion of advanced chemistry and AI-driven material development is not only transforming the construction industry but also setting new standards for sustainable innovation. It is a privilege to work with them to help protect and advance technologies that are shaping a greener future.”

Dr. Liz Gilligan, CEO at Material Evolution, commented: “Working with HGF has been instrumental in helping us protect and scale the scientific breakthroughs at the core of Material Evolution. Their expertise ensures that our innovations—rooted in chemistry, data, and sustainability—can be safely deployed to accelerate our mission to decarbonise the built environment.”

Congratulations to MevoCem for this well-deserved recognition!
