Experience

Nick specialises in patent matters in a wide range of high technology fields. Nick has particular experience in the fields of optics, high precision measurement systems, quantum computing, artificial intelligence and mobile telecommunications. His work includes drafting patent applications, prosecuting patent applications in the UK and Europe and managing prosecution of worldwide patent portfolios.

Nick also has particular experience of providing freedom to operate opinions and advising on other patent infringement and validity matters. Nick also regularly represents his clients during oral proceedings at the European patent office, in particular in relation to subject matter on the borderline of patentability.

Nick has experience of working with a wide variety of different clients including universities, SMEs and large multinational corporations. He enjoys helping clients to identify their IP and formulate protection strategies to secure commercially useful protection for their technology as well as helping them to navigate risks posed by their competitor's IP. Nick also has experience of managing IP portfolios in-house, having spent a 6 month period on secondment working in the IP team of a multinational telecommunications company.

Nick graduated from the University of Manchester in 2009 with a first class master’s degree in physics. As part of his degree he spent a year studying at the University of California. Nick then went on to gain a PhD in atmospheric physics in Manchester. His research focused on using remote sensing measurements taken from satellites to investigate radiative transfer processes in the atmosphere.

Nick enjoys training and mentoring junior attorneys. He has acted as a lead mentor for several groups of trainee attorneys providing support and guidance as they prepare for the necessary assessments to obtain their professional qualifications.

Nick also enjoys delivering IP training having designed and delivered several bespoke IP training sessions.
