Experience

Before joining HGF in 2016, John worked for four years in the in-house attorney team of Rolls-Royce Plc, and for five years in private practice. Experienced in patent drafting and portfolio management, he is recognised for his high and cost-effective success rate in prosecution. He also has particular skills in clearance and opinion work, using tried and tested approaches whilst tailoring for budget, time-frame, scale and risk appetite.

John is a fully qualified Chartered and European Patent Attorney. He also holds a postgraduate degree in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary University of London (which he passed with distinction) and an undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Warwick, UK.

John is highly experienced in the field of gas turbine engine design, manufacture and operation. He has also practiced in technology fields including telecommunications, automotive components and systems, navigation systems, construction, medical devices, ablution systems, bar equipment and composites.

Having experienced a well developed mid-size in-house team and participated in the evolution of its management and administrative systems, John can assist with developing a client’s Intellectual Property management infrastructure. His in-house experience also means he is comfortable liaising with all business functions and in particular inventors and managers at all levels of seniority.

John strives to achieve an in-house department style experience for his clients, proactively working to fully understand their businesses and to improve their Intellectual Property understanding. The hallmark of this approach is the provision of clear and comprehensive advice suited to the client’s unique commercial circumstances.
