Alastair Da Costa


Alastair joined HGF as non-executive board adviser in January 2019. He brings his extensive international board and executive level leadership experience in growing legal and professional services practices to the board of HGF. Alastair is also an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer and he has served as a director for a number of organisations.

Alastair has over 20 years of international board and executive level leadership experience growing teams across a number of sectors, including legal and professional services. Alastair is a corporate lawyer and non-executive board adviser with HGF and he previously had a long career with international law firm DLA Piper, where he was a Partner, Managing Director (for Asia Pacific and Middle East), Global Board and Executive member. At DLA Piper Alastair also served as global head of the corporate practice group and while in Asia he led and completed the firm’s £200m merger with the Australian firm Phillips Fox to create the largest Asia Pacific legal practice at that time.

Alastair qualified with Slaughter and May in 1990 and he joined the Leeds office of DLA Piper in 1992. He is Chair of Capital City College Group which through mergers in 2016 and 2017 became one of the largest further education college groups in the UK and he is a board director of The London School of Economics. In November 2018 Alastair was appointed a Commissioner to the UK Government’s Social Mobility Commission which advises Government on practical ways to improve social mobility. Alastair has held a number of other board level roles including as director of leadership consultancy Nicholson McBride and director and deputy chairman of Leeds and Partners/Marketing Leeds Limited.

Alastair has a law degree from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Development Management from The London School of Economics and he is a qualified solicitor.
