IAM Patent 1000

June 2017

The IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Professionals 2017 guide has now been published. The sixth edition of IAM's market-leading guide identifies and profiles leading patent professionals and firms in the world’s key jurisdictions. HGF are one of only 4 firms in the UK with 9 or more attorneys published within the Patent 1000. HGF are also listed as Recommended firm within the guide. This achievement comes on the back of a successful year for the firm with new office openings in Basel and Amsterdam, giving the firm a total of 3 offices in mainland Europe and ensuring we are well positioned for the opportunities in post Brexit Britain.

The 9 attorneys published in the guide are:

United Kingdom

The guide stated “Praise abounds for HGF’s “technical knowledge and flexible, adaptable approach to working with the changing needs of growing clients. Having it on board is essentially like having an in-house IP team without the full costs that would entail”. With a burgeoning contentious crew joining forces with a roster of over 100 patent attorneys, the firm is well placed to provide cradle-to-grave solutions to a vast array of rights holders. A new office was opened in Basel last year which – in addition to its existing outpost in The Hague – ensures that continental clients are well catered for. The squad also has a dedicated oppositions and appeals practice, led by Christopher Moore, who has a sterling track record at the EPO. Chemistry PhD Moore shines on life sciences briefs – an area in which Andrew Wells, Jonathan Atkinson and Janet Knowles all excel. Wells draws on ample in-house experience to devise business-focused portfolio management strategies. Atkinson is “extremely professional, responsive and patient. He is always open to discussion and new ideas to ensure clients are always extracting the maximum value from their intellectual property”. Knowles takes the lead on technology transfer briefs and is a trusted guide for educational institutions and their spin-off entities. High-growth companies have Matthew Dixon on speed dial; the engineering chief’s tactical nous is underlined by his position as director of the International IP Strategists Association. Senior partner Harry Hutchinson spearheads the set’s highly regarded electronics offering; while Matthew Cassie – recently promoted to partner – is a precision drafter who relishes the most technically and legally challenging mandates. Rachel Fetches joined the firm’s flourishing litigation team in 2015; she ensures the group is locked on to all the latest UPC developments as co-head of its UPC Ready team.”

The guide stated “In the decade since it set up shop in Scotland, HGF has developed a reputation for “superb, responsive legal advice and creative, cost-effective problem solving”. It has the necessary resources to deliver global solutions, providing worldwide patent prosecution services to Edinburgh University, energy storage innovator Sunamp and engineering company Schenck Process, among others. Oppositions and hearings at the European Patent Office (EPO) are another forte – not least thanks to the efforts of managing partner Gary Wilson. The chemistry whizz “offers a first-class service in all aspects of legal advice, value for money, commercial awareness and effective communication. He is proactive in working with clients to develop IP strategies and will actively challenge views and assumptions to reach the best patent portfolio position he can obtain”.
