HGF Women in STEM Network Evening - The CRISPR IP Battles
January 2017
London
HGF are hosting a Women in STEM Network Evening focusing on the CRISPR IP battles on Thursday 19th January 6pm - 8pm at the Wellcome Trust in London.
Two of the most talked about female scientists in recent times are unfortunately also at the centre of a highly publicised patenting battle. The on-going patent fight over the rights to CRISPR gene editing technology has been the subject of much comment in 2016.
In one corner is the UC Berkeley team headed by Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier. In the other, is a group led by Feng Zhang of the Broad Institute. It is not clear that the battle will be quickly ended but in the meantime there are already important lessons to be gleaned by anyone wishing to win at the same time both scientific accolades and commercial accolades in the form of enforceable, commercially useful patents. It is these lessons which form the basis of this talk.
