Trade Mark Director

Rebecca Field

What first attracted you to a career at HGF?
The fact that Intellectual Property is at the forefront of HGF’s business was a very attractive proposition to me as a trade mark professional. IP was just another aspect of the business at the company where I previously worked.

HGF attracts quality people with a wide range of backgrounds and it is interesting to work with people who have worked in-house or at other law firms.

What opportunities for progression and development have you had since you joined the Firm?
At HGF it is clear that hard work pays off. If you are committed to the firm and growing our business, then you will be rewarded. The support for trainees to earn qualifications is excellent and HGF fully supports any courses that you wish to attend, helping you broaden your knowledge and advance your development.

What are the most enjoyable aspects of your role at HGF?
I handle a large number of cases for a variety of different clients, so from day to day you never can tell what might cross your desk - it could be a domain name action or a client wishing to obtain trade mark protection in the US. Certainly, one of the most enjoyable aspects of my role is the international dimension and the opportunities I'm given to handle multi-jurisdictional trade mark issues with associates from other countries.

The most exciting aspect of my job is that you can actually see the brands that you manage out in the marketplace. Before companies launch new products, they ask for a clearance search on the new brand and it is interesting to advise companies on what brand name they should adopt.

I work for a variety of clients from fashion companies and food distributors to publishing houses and financial service companies. It is interesting to work with a diverse range of companies and watching their brands develop over time.

The social aspect of the firm is quite positive , we  do month end drinks in most offices, annual quiz between offices, Xmas party with all offices each year, fund raising walks

What makes you stay at HGF?
I believe that HGF is a firm that is definitely going places and the firm has grown both in size and reputation since I joined. After working in the Manchester office for a number of years, I am now based in the Birmingham office which opened in November 2012. The office has expanded rapidly and is giving me the opportunity to broaden my experience technically and develop my client base in a new region.

When I first met people from HGF and was making a decision about whether to join the Firm, I was struck by the obvious can-do attitude, drive and ambition of the partners. HGF is not a firm that simply cares about ‘getting by’, but rather places great emphasis on developing your technical skills and building stronger relationships with your clients.

HGF does not act for one specific type of client and this is makes the work interesting - I act for both large companies and individuals. In contrast to other firms, HGF provide their attorneys with the independence and autonomy to build their own client bases and the opportunity to attend overseas conferences such as INTA; attendance at these is crucial for building an international network.

If you had to describe working for HGF in just three words, what would they be?
Interesting, challenging and progressive.
