Matthew specializes in the pharmaceutical, life science and chemical industries. Matthew has considerable experience of patent drafting and European and worldwide patent prosecution.  Matthew is also experienced in EPO oppositions and has represented clients on numerous occasions before the EPO’s opposition division and Technical Boards of Appeal.  

Matthew has extensive experience relating to pharmaceutical subject matter including new chemical entities, processes and intermediates, pharmaceutical formulations, combination pharmaceutical products and further medical uses.

Matthew is a European Patent Attorney and a UK Patent Attorney specializing in the pharmaceutical, life science and chemical industries.

Before joining HGF in 2016, Matthew spent seven years in London in private practice representing large multinational clients, SMEs, spin outs and universities. Matthew gained a high level of experience in drafting patent applications for worldwide prosecution, managing patent prosecution portfolios, advising on European and foreign patent prosecution matters, EPO opposition and appeals, freedom to operate opinions and validity opinions. Matthew also has experience of UK patent litigation and due diligence matters.

While specializing in the pharmaceutical sector, Matthew has also helped clients obtain and defend patent rights in the areas of agrochemicals, polymers and food science. 

Prior to entering the patent law profession, Matthew worked as a medicinal chemist for 7 years at one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.  His work focussed on the lead optimisation of new chemical entities for the treatment of neurological conditions. Matthew has co-authored papers in several peer-reviewed journals and is a co-inventor on a number of patents/patent applications.
