Mark Ness

Patent Director

Mark joined HGF in 2016 having previously worked at another leading UK practice and in-house for a major pharmaceutical company. He practices in the field of chemistry and has extensive experience of drafting patent applications and of prosecuting patent portfolios globally. Mark has also been involved in a number of opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.

Mark handles a variety of inventions in the fields of chemistry and pharmaceuticals, including small molecules, medical uses, salt forms and polymorphs, formulations, dosing regimens and drug delivery systems, as well as catalysts, industrial processes and consumer cleaning products.  He has advised clients including individual inventors, SMEs and large multi-nationals.

Mark has almost 20 years’ experience of working in the pharmaceutical industry (both as a scientist and a patent attorney) and has an in-depth knowledge of this sector.  Mark’s practice has allowed him to put his knowledge of both organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry to good use.  He has drafted numerous applications for clients and has handled a large portfolio of prosecution work where he has successfully prosecuted applications on virtually every continent.  Mark has also handled a number of oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office.

In addition to his patent practice, Mark is able to provide strategic advice to clients on a range of other rights available for the protection of medicinal products.  For example, he has experience of filing and prosecuting supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) and can advise on the availability of regulatory data protection.  

Mark lives in Hertfordshire. He enjoys countryside walks, gastronomy and reading about architecture and design.
