Jo’s practice lies principally in the fields of mechanical engineering and materials technology. In addition to drafting and prosecution of patent applications, Jo has significant experience of dealing with IP aspects of commercial transactions, such as assignments and licensing, as well as the restoration of patent rights in the UK and overseas.

Jo’s experience in the IP profession spans a wide range of subject matter, handing the IP portfolios of a diverse range of clients, including SMEs and multinational companies, principally in the fields of mechanical engineering and materials technology. Technical specialisms include environmental and subsea technologies, drive and control systems for the automotive industry, food and beverage packaging, and medical devices.

Jo read Chemistry with Patent Law to Masters level at The University of Manchester in the UK, specialising in the design and synthesis of Ruthenium-based dyes for use in solar cells, and X-Ray crystal structure studies of cisplatin and carboplatin interactions with proteins.

Prior to joining HGF in 2018, Jo obtained considerable experience working at two other private practice IP firms. In addition to drafting and prosecution of patent applications, Jo has significant experience of dealing with the IP aspects of commercial transactions, such as assignments and licensing, as well as the restoration of patent rights in the UK and overseas. Jo has also gained considerable experience of drafting and filing Registered Design applications, both in the UK and Europe.

Jo has a strong commercial interest and has regularly presented talks on IP protection at universities, and acted as IP Mentor for a Business Accelerator Programme for over two years. Having gained one of the highest marks in the UK Advanced Level Drafting paper, Jo is currently in the final stages of qualification as a UK and European Patent Attorney.
