Joanna Deas

Patent Director

Joanna is a European and UK patent attorney with over ten years’ experience in the areas of chemistry and medical devices. Her main focus is patent and registered design protection for medical devices and medical processes. Joanna also specialises in representing clients at EPO Opposition and Appeal hearings, and regularly attends hearings in Munich and The Hague.

Joanna has particular expertise in patent and registered design protection for medical technologies such as medical devices and processes. Her practice also includes working in other areas such as chemistry, formulations, polymers and pharmaceuticals.

Having attended over 50 hearings, Joanna has a proven track record in achieving success by representing clients before the EPO at Opposition and Appeal hearings. Joanna has been responsible for a number of high profile cases for a well-known FMCG company. She has also been involved in important mock hearings for several clients.

Joanna has worked with many large, medium and small companies, including medical device start-ups and international companies. She has also worked closely with surgeons, whose first hand field experience has led to the development of innovative medical devices.

Through her involvement with Universities she has been actively involved in running IP clinics, and encouraging both students and academics to protect their innovations.

Joanna joined HGF in January 2018 as a Patent Director to open and develop the firm’s Nottingham office.

Joanna has a MChem in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry from St Andrews University, and completed an industrial placement at Reckitt Benckiser.
