Dr Jerry Bretherton

Patent Director

Jerry has over a decade of experience in the patent profession, specialising in chemical and mechanical technologies, with experience of medical device, chemical formulation, solid state and process chemistries, composites and other materials cases. As well as drafting and prosecuting patent applications, he provides FTO and strategic IP advice and handles oppositions and other oral proceedings before the EPO.

He has a broad range of expertise dealing with medical devices, including pulse oximetry, laryngoscopy and latterly a wide range of transcatheter devices. Jerry’s practice also includes chemical and materials technologies, oil and gas mechanical and chemical inventions, aerospace and composites technologies, and hydraulic and pneumatic components and systems.

Jerry has extensive experience of drafting and prosecuting applications before the EPO and UKIPO, and managing international patent portfolios. In addition, he has advised his clients on patent infringement and validity, and assisted in due diligence on behalf of his clients.

Jerry holds a first class M. Chem from the University of Oxford and went on to obtain a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in the field of solid state NMR spectroscopy.  

On returning to the UK Jerry spent time in industrial R&D and university technology transfer, before joining the patent profession in 2007. He moved to the Edinburgh office of HGF in September 2015, from another top-tier UK firm.
