Ellis is an expert in global data protection, privacy and e-marketing laws with 20 years of experience in leading international organisations’ global compliance programmes.
In his previous role, Ellis was the Global Lead for Data Privacy for over eight years, prior to that he was Global Privacy Counsel at AstraZeneca for eight years. Ellis has 19 years' PQE, an MBA and is a contributing author to Sweet & Maxwell's "Data Protection Law & Practice" 4th and 5th editions and its standalone guide to the GDPR.
His practice covers all aspects of data protection laws including privacy, freedom of expression and of information, e-marketing laws (including profiling and loyalty card schemes). Areas of expertise include advising on the data privacy implications for whistleblowing hotlines, internal investigations, international e-discovery requests, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering monitoring, regulatory “dawn raids”, data lakes and the deployment of artificial intelligence.
Ellis’ focus recently, with the advent of the GDPR, has been on conducting data protection impact assessments and audits, managing data breaches, complying with international transfer restrictions (including re-certification of Binding Corporate Rules) and records of processing obligations, writing information retention policies and procedures and operationalising data subjects’ rights. Ellis has been actively engaged in the emerging field of data ethics for over two years now and continues to pursue this interest professionally in addition to his contribution to HGF
