Dr Owain Staines
Owain joined HGF at the York office in January 2013. Since then his work has primarily involved the prosecution and drafting of patent applications in the fields of physics, electronics and telecommunications, with a particular focus on mobile devices, computer software and 3GPP-related standards.
Owain graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2009 with a Masters degree in Theoretical Physics. During these years of study he acquired a solid foundation of knowledge in a wide variety of physics topics in addition to various associated mathematical and computational skills.
In October 2009 Owain began studying towards a PhD in Physics at the University of Bath and completed his PhD in 2013. The scope of this project was to investigate nonlinear photonics in silicon-on-insulator nano-waveguide arrays through theoretical considerations and numerical modelling. A major emphasis of his research was the topic of optical solitons - a phenomena closely linked to efficient optical data transmission and various other applications such as supercontinuum generation.
Owain holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property from Bournemouth University, obtained in 2014. Owain qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in March 2016, and as a European Patent Attorney in July 2016.
