Dr Nicholas Howe
Trainee Patent Attorney
Nick specialises in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Nick is a part-qualified patent attorney having joined the Manchester office of HGF in May 2017 and is currently working towards full qualification.
Nick graduated from the University of York with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, including a year spent studying and working in Germany. He subsequently completed a PhD at Manchester University focusing on carbohydrate chemistry and wound healing.
In 2000, Nick joined a global pharmaceutical company as a senior research scientist. In the following years, Nick worked on numerous, diverse projects across the drug discovery pipeline, from early stage lead identification through to process optimisation and drug development. Part of his role involved leading collaborations with small and medium-sized custom research organisations, to supply intermediates and final compounds to support drug delivery. Nick is an author on multiple, peer-reviewed scientific articles.
In September 2014, Nick made the transition into the in-house IP department of the multi-national pharmaceutical company. There he gained experience of patent drafting and prosecution, as well as freedom-to-operate and patentability searching. Nick provided IP support to a number of projects aimed at delivering new medicines and also medical devices.
Nick is currently working towards professional qualification. He holds a Post-Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Bournemouth University, and has passed three of the UK final exams, in addition to the European pre-examination.
