Alastair has considerable experience protecting inventions in the mechanical industries, particularly in the energy sector. He has been advising local and international clients on developing and maximising their IP portfolios for several years.
Alastair has extensive experience covering a wide variety of technologies including downhole tools, control devices, renewable energy inventions, as well as numerous fluid technologies across a range of fields, such as pumps, conduits, filters and engines; and various other mechanical technologies, such as automotive and medical.
Alastair provides practical advice on all aspects of patents, especially strategy, drafting, prosecution and enforcement. As well as formally representing clients before the UK and European Patent Offices, such as in Oppositions proceedings, Alastair provides bespoke overseas advice, particularly for the USA and Asian territories. He also has considerable experience of advising on design protection.
Prior to entering the patent profession, Alastair spent a decade working in research & development for firms in Scotland and the Netherlands ranging from large multinationals to a small university spin-out. During his time in the Netherlands, Alastair became fluent in Dutch.
Alastair formally entered the patent profession in 2009 with a large Scottish IP firm and rapidly progressed to UK and European qualification. Alastair joined HGF in 2016 to become part of the team in the Aberdeen office.
